Tai Chi Chee Sau (Sticking Hands) Fully Explained: Volume One

In this short series, Erle teaches the important area of Tai Chi Chee Sau or Sticking Hands. Erle has covered this area of one's push hands straining briefly on other DVDs but never in such great detail in a dedicated DVD set. Chee Sau is not an advancement of Push Hands but rather an addition where we join hands with a partner and begin circling the hands 180 degrees out of phase, never losing contact. We learn to use Eagle Vision and to attack as soon as we are attacked with the shortest route and with the greatest power from short distances. We learn at a reflex level how to know when an attack will happen and to move the body accordingly in an instant and to re-attack to vital points. We learn how to react at a sub-conscious level by taking in how the opponent's body moves in order to know what type of attack is immenent even before it happens!

Small Frame Fa-Jing or Small Internal Explosive Energy: Also “Small Frame” Single Push Hands.
Erle Montaigue taught “Small Frame” at his 2010 Summer Camp. The whole camp’s theme was “Small Frame”, allowing students to see and participate and learn the highest levels of just about everything. Even if a student is not ready for this level of learning, it is always important to see their teacher doing the highest level so that their inner mind knows what is to come. Here, Erle teaches an exciting area of “Small Fa-Jing”. We begin with the larger fa-jing which is by the way much smaller and more explosive than what most teach. Then we take it down into small fa-jing where there is hardly any body movement. Erle demonstrates this power on punching mitts which shows that even more power can be got using Small Frame Fa-Jing. He then continues this way and takes you into Healing Fa-Jing which is often called “Acupuncture Without Needles”. This is where we take that immense power generated by Self Defence Small Fa-jing and put it into the internal realms so that only the “Energy” or “Qi” is emitted into the acu point that needs healing. This is the highest level of healing and necessary for all acupuncturists who only know where to stick needles but who do not know how to “put energy”. Erle also covers an important area of Small Frame Push Hands of which there are three methods: High, Middle and Low. It shows that you do not need to hold your arms out from the body in order to stop powerful attacks. Attacks happen in your face, so this way of push hands takes you into the realms of self defence push hands and works hand in hand with “Small Fa-Jing”. MTG387 Small Frame Large San-Sau Two Person Set Volume One Filmed at Erle Montaigue’s Summer Camp 2010, this series takes your two person set of Large San-Sau to the highest level of “Small Frame”. The whole camp’s theme was “Small Frame”, allowing students to see and participate and learn the highest levels of just about everything. Even if a student is not ready for this level of learning, it is always important to see their teacher doing the highest level so that their inner mind knows what is to come. Large San-Sau teaches us “how” to move in a self defence situation. It teaches us to move as the attack is beginning to be launched. It gives us a “reflexive” mind that will move the body immediately upon his attack being thrown at us. Also covered is a small section on Small Frame Push Hands which is also relevant to San-Sau. Small Frame is where Tai Chi ch’uan and Baguazhang come to their pinnacle. This is where it all ends and what we have been working toward for many years. Once learnt, “Small Frame” methods will then grown into everything you do an give you real self defence!

How to: And How Not To Kick in the Internal Arts

Here, Erle Montaigue shows that most kicks will not work in a street fight! Use them for the exercise and stretch and health benefits, or if you have a penchant for tournament karate etc. But NEVER in the street. Erle teaches exactly the body mechanics of "silly" high kicks as well as the more practical lower kicks to the legs. how to gain power when kicking from the front leg, never using the rear leg as this is telegraphed. Back Kicks: Back Turning Kicks: Back Spinning Kicks: Crescent Kicks: Roundhouse Kicks: Reverse Crescent Kicks: Jumping (really silly) turning kicks: Double Kicks: Leg kicks of all types: Useful Kicks: Are all covered.

The Knife: Real World Knife Fighting: Training and Application Volume 2

This DVD sees the start of a series of titles covering real world street knife defence and use. Seeing what many others are teaching about how to use a knife in a real self defence situation, this series is an attempt to show and teach students how NOT to be killed using stupid techniques such as grabbing the arm that is holding the knife! Erle Montaigue lends his vast experience in the real world of knife fighting. In this 2nd volume, Erle covers more on "Eagle Vision" and how to "If Someone Attacks you, Attack Him First" methods. Plus we begin the exciting area of "Bagua Knife" which means 8 Diagram Knife. There are 8 two person training methods firstly using a fighting stick which represents a knife. Each set also has 8 either defence/offence and kill moves making a total of 64. We then go on and use the rubber knife using those same 8 methods. This is an excellent way to take your movements to a reflex level. You will need a rubber practice knife, some arm guards, a real knife and a piece of dowelling about 2 feet in length. (60 cm).

MTG377

Dim-Mak Cornerstones V. 4 “The Mountain Form” The last in the series.

For the first time ever, the very rare 4 Dim-Mak forms or "Cornerstones of Dim-Mak" are taught by Erle Montaigue. These are the only forms that Dim-Mak has as it is not an art unto itself! However, the masters of Wudang only taught these 4 cornerstone forms at the end of one's training. They taught you how to turn movement into reflex actions in real fighting situations and also for healing the body. Here Erle teaches the Fourth of the forms, the "The Mountain" form, which works upon the Gall Bladder, Liver and Triple Heater meridians. Here we gain the power of stillness within. However, there are times when the stillness has to explode into action such as a volcano! This form gives you that ability. Some potent Qigong Methods also in this/these forms.

MTG353
Dim-Mak Cornerstones V. 3 “The Valley Form”

Here Erle teaches the Third of the forms, the "Valleys" form, which works upon the Pericardium, Bladder and Kidney meridians. Some potent Qigong Methods also in this/these forms.

Dim-Mak Cornerstones V. 2 “The Air/Sky Form”

Here Erle teaches the second of the forms, the "Air or Sky" form, representing the 3 organs of Lung, Colon and Stomach meridians. The Qigong associated with this form is called "Mind/Body Qigong.

MTG351
Dim-Mak Cornerstones V. 1 “The River Form”

In this series, Erle takes you through the first of the very rare 4 Cornerstone forms of Dim-Mak. Dim-Mak does not actually have a system on its own, as Taiji and Bagua are the foundation forms of Dim-Mak. However, near to the end of one’s physical training at Wudang, 4 intricate but beautiful forms were taught to give you the “keys” that unlock the whole of your training thus far! They are based upon the four main EARTH elements of Water (River), Air (Wind), Valleys and Mountains. They are based upon the internal aspects of those “elements”, very powerful, often slow and flowing, often very explosive.

Dim-Mak: The Most Practical and Most Deadly Point Strikes and Combinations from Dim-Mak: Volume One.

Here, Erle Montaigue begins a new and exciting area of training; that of Dim-Mak and the most easily accessible and practical points to strike to gain the most effect. On this volume 6 very violent self defence methods are taught all aimed essentially at the CV22 point with peripherals including GB3, ST9, GV15 and other extremely dangerous Dim-Mak points. Also included is Fa-Jing Testing which is the only way to test one’s advancement in this explosive part of one’s training. Fa-Jing is the motor of all Internal Fighting Systems without which we would not even have a fighting art. It is the explosive attacking method that teaches us how to gain great power from only a few inches away. This is Erle Montaigue getting back to what he does best and what he is known for. Real Self Defence methods, practical and violent. They HAVE to be violent!

This is an exciting area of one's Baguazhang training as it involves very advanced methods of doing the Bagua Linear Form. Here we learn how to use this great form as Qigong in order to completely re-balance the internal Qi. Excellent for anti-depression etc.
We also learn that this form, when done in a different way can be used to build body muscle for the self defence arts. Doing this form at this more explosive level is like doing an hour at the gym. Excellent for self defence as it build all the correct muscle groups for fighting.
See and ARTICLE on this: This form is also part of the "Qi Activation and Manifestation" method, where we are able to actually use the postures in certain ways to heal others in a full therapy for various disease and body states. You can read an ARTICLE Here:

Well, Erle promised last month that the June workshop was going to concentrate on the combat aspects of our system and boy did he deliver.
The sun shone on Saturday as we traversed across the country- destination Llangadog. For once the Gods were smiling as the sun was also shining on the other side of the Brecons!
As we all huddled inside the hall, Erle started with what has now become our customary warm ups - striking the focus shields. We began with the "crane spreads wings" punch directly from our form, however, done with a slight twist. This time our so called "kill-shot" was to become our secondary shot. The primary shot would be a stun type shot followed instantly by the big guns firing!!! This really got the muscles warmed up and then Erle started "drinking" one big lump from the spitoon!!!!
Ok! If the above doesn't make sense then buy the video and you'll see what I mean - the topic turned to the Reptilian Brian (yes, that does read BRIAN - again those who were there will understand for the rest read Brain!!!). Erle talked at length about the importance of the reptilian brain during real combat and how to access this wonderful organ. After explaining the "C" back and how that linked with the reptilian brain mode, off we went again to work upon the shields to develop these ideas. The strikes again were multiple reflexive attacks in defending ourselves.
After a short break out came the Bogu masks and we finally got to strike directly at our targets as opposed pulling our punches. This, again, added another dimension of reality to the training methods. As before, Erle demonstrated the attacks on Eli (and jarred his neck on a couple of occasions - healed with fatherly kisses!) before he let us loose upon one another. Also covered: Angles of attack and  The Tai Chi Posture "Chee" with multiple kill methods.
As the day wore on we continued with the chin na applications, which we started last month, covering "guard your house" & "fist under elbow" as well as beginning the Hawk form of Baguazhang (more about this later). We ended the Saturday by learning a qigong which would help us develop our reptilian brain & "C" - back mode.
Thus, the day came to an end. It actually went rather quickly, as we hugged each other & shook hands firmly. Myself and Jerry in our matching purple tops - we could have been mistaken for twins in our colour coordinated training gear until someone mentioned that Jerry was white and that ended that!!!
Back we traversed across the land making a short pit stop at the Sommerfields in Llandovery, where Kam was shocked to find the checkout staff speaking - wait for it- English!!!
We arrived with our bruised and battered bodies back to Leicester, hoping to fall into a deep slumber and get some rest for the next day - did I heck!!! I ended up mowing Kam's mum's garden till 10 at night while that git went home & slept!!!
Sunday morning, the sun shone, the birds sang until that is we passed Hereford - dark clouds gathered on the Welsh borders as the summer came to an end!
Onwards we went towards Llangadog to begin another day.
Well there were a few more faces on Sunday. Erle again drank from the spitoon and we carried on from the previous day.
Yielding and understanding the classics regarding to this very misunderstood topic was flavour of the day. Again, the detail and information regarding this subject was of the highest quality, delivered in a typically Erle fashion with the aid of a Monty Python sketch!
However, all the horsing around didn't distract from the importance of understanding what it meant to yield. Erle tied this subject up beautifully by linking it's importance to the small frame form and push hands or joining hands as he prefers to call it. This was certainly an eye opener for those who perhaps haven't had the chance to do a lot of push hands etc.
Once more we linked everything into practicing our attacks using the concept of "yielding" followed by some chee sau including the reverse roll. Again, throughout, Erle emphasised the importance of the "power stance" whilst plying our trade.
We returned to the Hawk in the afternoon and continued from where we'd left off the previous day. I'd like to think that by the fourth change, we were all diving & tumbling as gracefully as the bird in question but that'd be a lie!
Jerry looked like a chick that has tumbled out of it's nest! Elliot & Neil appeared to be doing the form in synchronization, which rather resembled Come Dancing! Kam tried to film it all without switching the camera on & I, mercifully, faked an old war wound and saved myself for the attempt to come in Germany!!!
At 1.45pm, I reminded Erle he had also promised to show us, both, the yin & yang side of the Xingyi Fire Drill on the previous day, to which he replied in the way only Erle can - "Oh F**K!"
And that's how the weekend ended. Ben rummaged around for a spare tape and in ten minutes flat we had the Xingyi drill down and filmed. Most of us were brain-dead at that point, so it didn't really matter! Oh, and we had only made it 1/3 down Erle's list of things to do!!!
With broken bodies we said goodbyes, slumped into our cars and headed home. And it rained!!!!
Roll on the next session on 30th June-1st July!!
P.S. I am so knackered that it is now 1.45 in the morning and I can't sleep!!!

Taken from Erle's Invitational Instructor only classes in Llangadog Wales.
This volume and the next volume 13 (above) include the following.
From Erle:
These classes are to teach about reflexive self defence. We do not learn about sparring or even fighting, just real self defence from a sub-conscious level. Sparring in fact is the worst thing that one can do if you wish to learn about self defence as it causes you to learn about sparring! And "Sparring" does not happen in the street, nor does tournament "fighting". Sure, if you wish to do a sport then do your tournament sparring but do not expect it to save you in a real fight! In fact, many have discovered that it is almost impossible to learn real self defence methods when they have learned and practiced tournament sparring for many years or even become World Champions etc. First real fight in the street and they go down. This is because they have never worked upon reflexive actions, they have in fact tried to use their kata as self defence! And Kata and Form are NOT for self defence, they were only ever meant to teach us how to move, well "Form" was for that as most karate schools teach that kata is for fighting!
So from now onward, this is where we take what we have already learnt in these classes and put it into the real world. The punching mitts and shields are now replaced by your body! We will be doing what we in the internal call; "attack/defence". This is where one person will gear up in protective stuff and try to knock his partner's head off! And his partner has to react reflexively and register a solid and telling blow onto the attacker's body.
Of course, this will move along very slowly as another damaging area for real self defence is going into it too soon or simply having to fight someone when you aren't ready. So do not worry, we will be taking it very slowly and those who perhaps aren't up to it yet, we will be gentle!
I will also be covering push hands, da-lu and ch'i-na along with stick fighting on a more basic "bang 'em up" level as we have now finished the twelve Wudang stick fighting methods forms.
Our multiple kill and single kill methods have now become a little more sophisticated in that we have other things to do other than just bashing the shyte out of the opponent! We still do that, but also take into account that other things might happen and we have to be aware of these. So these are incorporated into the training.
We will also continue with the developing of the "Fa-Jing Muscle" training in order to train the group of muscles particularly involved in issuing fa-jing or explosive energy.
Xingyi also gets a look in with the next of the drills covering the fire elements both yin and yang drills.
So come along as these classes are accumulative and on-going so to miss out, is to miss out!
Happy training
Erle

This series of DVDs  is being shot during Erle’s Invitation only instructor’s classes, the 4th of which was held in Llangadog, Wales UK 20th and 21st of January 2007.  Here, Erle presents for the first time, Yang’s 5th House, the little known physical side of the Yang Style, no BS, no mystical garbage, just excellent and practical physical stuff on gaining great power for multiple strike kill methods to all parts of the body. The Yang Shou-hou side of the Yang Family was quite hard and often, blood would be left on the floor. Gaining the power from short distances was the key to this type of training. Speed was useless unless extreme power was also present. So this series gives you that ultimate power. You will gain the confidence knowing that you can take anyone out no matter how large or powerful he is with one or two strikes.
Included on this volume:

Multiple Strike  Kill Methods:
Knife and Stick Fighting, the realistic way for the street. Tai Chi Chee-Sau (Sticking Hands), Short Stick Fighting, Applications of over-kill.

It’s no use learning all of the forms etc., and not knowing how to punch! And it has been our experience that not many people actually know how to punch. Sure many can line themselves up and break boards, but in the street instantly, they cannot gain the necessary power from only centre metres away to take someone out instantly with one punch. This DVD teaches how to do this.

Defence against knife attack, defence against knife using a knife and/or a stick. Weapons included are short stick and a very useful hand held 6" stick.

Baguazhang is an amazing fighting system for realistic self defence. It teaches us to react at a reflex level instinctively and sub-consciously, using whatever method is suitable for that type of attack upon you. This is where Erle Montaigue learnt how to fight; the exact methods he used to take his internal arts to that higher level. On this volume, Erle takes you further into the fighting methods of Bagua, covering the very deadly methods of ‘Single Pounding Palm’, point striking and fighting techniques. This series will teach you at a reflex level how to REALLY fight rather than simply learning some kata and expecting that to help you!

Not really 10,000, this is just the way that the Chinese have of describing that there are a lot of them. 10,000 seems to be the number that they use for everything that has to be done a lot. Here, Erle Montaigue carries on with the long awaited series on the main applications from the postures of the Yang Lu-ch'an form showing not only the basics but also the dim-mak applications following each posture. This is not meant to teach the Old Yang Style as one should already know it, it is just to demonstrate and to teach what each posture is for. On this volume Erle takes you from the posture known as High pat on Horse just before the first kicking section and up to the posture called High Pat On Horse, (but not including) in the third 3rd.

Many people have asked for this series covering purely the physical movements techniques and ideas from what has become to be known as 'The Erle Montaigue Fighting System'. On this volume, Erle gives an introduction to this way of fighting which has been derived from the internal arts of Tai Chi Ch'uan and Baguazhang. He introduces the idea of using longer weapons that the attacker and making the attacker feel like there is no distance between he and you (you have struck him before he has even time to strike you). Erle covers leg attacks using your front foot and how to gain great power off of this foot. He gives some really good fighting methods using the feet. Then he goes on to begin the way of Monkey Boxing and how it really relates to human beings and how to gain the tremendous power that Monkeys have in their arms and hands. He teaches the Monkey on-guard stance as well as the human on-guard stance and how to go into the 'reptile brain' from this stance. In a nutshell, this series teaches you how to fight like a wild animal and not like a human being!

This 3 part series beginning with MTG247, covers the rare Wudang stick fighting method using a short stick somewhat like the Arnis type of stick. Only one stick is used and is aimed at an edged weapon such as a knife attack. There are 12 training drills covering every conceivable type of knife attack using the stick to defend against it. Your partner also uses a stick as we strike his stick which represents his forearm or wrist. 4 of the twelve drills will be taught on each of the 3 volumes. Possibly the easiest of all weapons to use is the short stick as you can usually get one from somewhere. The drills begin simple and continue with ever increasing complicated and longer drills until the twelve are finished. On this volume one, the first four methods are taught.

On this title, Erle shows and teaches the next two forms in the advanced knife fighting methods, those of "Bending Form" and "Fast Footwork Form". These two forms were taught at Erle's recent International workshop in Australia and all were in awe of the graceful movement and deadly application that these forms give. They also allow your brain to push out a balanced level of 'Fight or Flight' hormones/chemicals into the body so that the correct one will be chosen in any given situation etc. So if it's fight you must, then you will fight with the greatest amount of energy and aggression etc. Some very interesting techniques are shown within each of these forms.

On this tape, Erle begins his Advanced Knife Fighting both using the knife against another knife attacker and using empty hands against a knife attacker or a group of them.
Chang Yiu-chun was the supreme knife fighter even into his eighties. And it was not until Erle's final months of training that he opened up and told Erle how he got to where he was in this field. He used to perform a group of 12 short training methods using the knife. These training methods gave one the necessary tools and sub-conscious reaction that one needs to defend against a knife attack. These methods are shown on this series as well as the 'WAY' of Internal Knife Fighting as taught by Chang.

Erle Montaigue receives many requests for a more simple way of showing the most deadly point strikes on the most deadly meridians using Baguazhang. This video series shows how Bagua uses three consecutive strikes using fa-jing all aimed at the most deadly dim-mak points on the most deadly meridians. Erle shows how to use each weapon without damaging yourself, using a hard mitt. He then goes on to show each point and its effect upon the body. Then he shows Bagua Fighting techniques to gain the most from this system. This is an easy to learn from series, it is not sophisticated, it is just straight down to earth Bagua fighting at its best, or worst if you are on the other end of it!

This method is inherent everywhere in Taijiquan and Baguazhang and if there would be an unbeatable fighting method, this should be it. If you can touch him, you can strike him, so why block! Why not block AND attack at the same time. If you can strike someone, you will also deflect his on-coming attack. Single Hand P'eng Methods, Two Hand P'eng Methods, Single Handed Hinge Methods, double handed Hinge Methods are shown plus some excellent training methods using two people to gain this method.

These attacking methods are some of the deadliest methods ever invented and are to be used only if it is really serious! Often we will need to attack before we are attacked ("If he attacks, hit him first") either in a one on one situation or in a multiple attacking situation. Erle shows how to pre-empt his attack and get in with deadly one two three and four attacks before he has even reacted. Erle shows Chang's deadly fists, 'Dog Fist' and 'Reverse Dog Fist' in a pre-emptive attacking method that will defeat on the first punch let alone on the next 3 or 4 instant attacks.

As all of the Internal forms and fighting styles came from the WUDANG SHAN system's 12 Wudang forms, so too do the two person sets from Taijiquan and Baguazhang come from the 12 Wudang Hand Weapon training sets.
Before push hands, there were the 12 Wudang Hand Weapons. There are the precursors to push hands. Not the silly 'you push me, I push you' type of push hands that most schools now teach and often go into competition with! But rather the excellent p'eng/hinge, fighting push hands methods of today and the Erle Montaigue system.
These 12 two person training methods teach you everything you need to know in order to turn your fighting into reflexive actions that will just happen automatically when attacked. If anyone asks me about what training methods I advise to learn how to fight, I tell them the 12 Wudang methods, along with most of the other stuff, but these are really special. They teach you fa-jing, how to use it, instant reaction, never stop attacking, how to move the body in a flowing energy saving manner, deadly fighting methods which attack to the most vulnerable points on the body, how to move in accordance with what the opponent is doing to you. How to do the most damage in the least possible time with the least wastage of energy. The hands are used in the way of their name. So the 'Spear' is used to cut and stab etc.
In this 2nd volume, Erle Montaigue covers in his usual great detail, the last six hand weapons of:

COMBINE HAND:
This one combines many aspects of the first six methods and teaches us about instant attack and defence in any given situation.
DART HAND: This method teaches us about the use of very quick hands in continually striking with different methods. One hand strikes as the other one controls etc., just like the Chinese weapon called the 'dart'.
DRILLING HAND: This method teaches us about one of the most important methods of attack using drilling methods.
SHOVEL or SPADE HAND: This one makes use of the flats of the palms for attack and defence as you would if you were using a shovel!
DOUBLE BLADE HAND: This one uses the palms as if they were two blades in attack and defence. A very devastating method of self-defence also!
STUMP PULLER HAND:
This one has a lot of pushing (jerking) and pulling movements which work upon joints to dislocate them along with the more devastating dim-mak strikes.

Hammer: This two person set makes use of the closed fist using the base of the fist as a hammer. It attacks the CO 10 or 12 points in a devastating 'Point Set Up' strike, ST 9 and 10 (neck), GB 3 (Temple) and again ST 9. Then in retaliation of this last strike, your partner then has a go.
Spear: This one is deadly and caution must be taken when training as the eyes are involved. The points struck are; CO 10, eyes (scraping the finger nails across them), eyes (same in the opposite direction), CV 22 (by spearing it) and ST 10.
Sword: This one is also very dangerous; CO 10 (Set Up), ST 0, ST 10, ST 11, TH 17, Neck in general, GB 3 (Temple) and ST 9 and 10.
Plough: This one is wonderful as it trains your reflex actions to perfection; Neigwan (both hands), 4 Neck points, LU 5, CV 22 (Neck in general).
Axe: This one attacks to; LU 8 (Both sides), Both sides of the neck chopping, chopping down onto either side of the neck covering many deadly points, back into LIV 13 both sides.
The Nun: The 'Nun' is a 3 section Chinese implement for thrashing wheat or rice. It has been  modified in its physical weapon form for fighting. This one attacks to mainly the neck and arms using the arms and hand weapons in the typical Bagua type 'Nun' posture so that the arms look like a 3 section staff.

This tape is a way of taking one's advanced push hands training into a realistic physical realm. We firstly take push hands into a completely reflex way of training so that the movements become sub-conscious. Then we use the ten training applications of sudden violence from Push hands to add to this abstract way, a more physical way of using push hands in order to join the sub-conscious to the physical. Ten applications from within push hands using the p'eng/hinge method of push hands does this for you. Very deadly and very useful both for training and for real self-defence.

You virtually have a loaded gun in your hands when you know these methods. It does not matter how big, or strong or how well he knows martial arts, no-one can defend against these deadly finger and palm methods to the eyes. But you have to know how as the eyes have their own self-defence mechanism which comes in automatically. So we have to know ways of shutting down this mechanism first!

This is definitely the last in the series of Sudden Violence. It was Chang's idea that if one could, sort of defend oneself against weapons then the empty hand defences would come easier. And this is true. Chang taught me five methods against weapons. A short stick and a long stick which are indicative of just about any type of weapon. He would use his fingers as stabbing spears and his knife edge palm as well as his elbow in these methods. He said that one strike would stun, the second would knock out while the third would kill. Although these methods are not traditionally "Sudden Violence" methods, they still use Sudden Violence as the motor so I have included them
here in this series.

Definitely the last one in the series. This volume deals with hands and feet working together. A little more complicated than previous volumes, however, these methods are just a deadly and useful. Also covered is the very basic 'motor' of Sudden Violence", The Old way of Attack Push Hands, without which it is very difficult to learn Sudden Violence methods.

On this tape, Erle Montaigue takes you through some of the sudden violence methods used against attackers who will rush at you, like for instance a football player who is used to doing this. The basic principles are always adhered to, however, special emphasis must be placed upon evasion and surprise so that the attacker's 'switches' are confused. Erle shows the high type of attack as well as when someone goes low as in a rugby type of tackle.

On this series, Erle Montaigue presents his "Sudden Violence" method of fighting. This series presents the raw, deadly and extremely violent fighting methods necessary for any realistic confrontation. If you do not have 'Animal Violence" then you will lose. "Animal Violence" is not being 'angry' as anger will only cause you to be defeated. Violence in fighting is a sub-conscious reaction to a survival situation where we are able to go into the Reptile Brain part of our brain sub-consciously in order to survive in just the same way that any animal does. On the other side of the coin, "Sudden Violence" also teaches us how to heal as all of the prerequisites necessary for self-defence using "Sudden Violence" are also necessary for the two area of healing; healing others and healing ourselves. Here, Erle presents the pure mechanics of violent fighting showing very dangerous and violent fighting methods, never giving a sucker an even break! If you can hit him once, then hit him ten times! In two sections, Erle presents firstly on this tape some of the 'centrifugal' Sudden Violence methods. These will continue in to volume two and then he will present the 'Straight Line' methods. Although the straight line methods are also circular, they contain very small circular movements and so are not as easy to learn as the purely centrifugal methods. Obviously, you cannot learn the Erle Montaigue system of 'Sudden Violence' without having some knowledge of Dim-Mak, so Erle also explains exactly what points you are striking and the correct directions and pressure (usually full on!). Anyone can learn the extremely street oriented method of 'Sudden Violence", however, those who have some knowledge of the Internal Principles of 'Sung', 'Fa-Jing' and 'Continuous Flowing Movement' will learn quicker. In many cases these methods have changed the stiffer types of martial art to a more flowing system which is what we need in the street if we are to survive. As usual, This series is filmed while Erle is in full teaching mode so that every tiny area will be covered by seeing what the students are doing wrong and correcting them on camera. Duration: 1 Hour and 6 Minutes.

If someone attacks you hit them first. This is a statement made by a famous Tai chi master from way back.

No mind boxing means, don’t think about what we will do when we are fighting, just do it.
Basis of the whole fighting art of Tai Chi
is structured, if someone attacks, attack them first.
Don’t take postures of Tai Chi and try to apply or use them as a self defence mechanism,
your Tai Chi will become mediocre or a self defence fighting art.
Tai Chi has a key, that leads us to no mind boxing (fighting).
It trains us in a way that we act like a motor. We don’t think about what technique or how to fight, we just do it. Erle believes all martial arts are only tools to take us to a fighting art, it’s the same for exercises.
Dragon Claw Boxing (Long Har Chuan),
comes from Tai Chi. It involves all methods and a few peripherals. It is the key that leads us to no technique.
Tai Chi form and push hands is not useless,
it gives us timing balance and coordination, mostly timing. Three important prerequisites for any martial art, but that’s all they give us. We then must have the key to take those techniques into no techniques at all. This is where Tai Chi excels at an advanced stage. If for instance you see Tai Chi people sparring, Erle uses the term sparring loosely, in Tai Chi we don’t actually have sparring, we have attack defence methods which is a more realistic situation.
Sparring is a totally unnatural situation both people are ready for each other to do something to them.
In a realistic situation you are not ready to punch somebody in the mouth, block an arm or break someone's leg, you are just walking down the street minding your own business. Your attacker however, has the advantage because he or she is ready to attack you. This is were advanced training in Tai Chi comes in handy, because it immediately allows us to change our minds into that gear were we are able to defend ourselves very quickly. So if you learn a martial art it does not necessarily mean you learned a defensive art. You can do all the sparring in the world, you can be the worlds greatest sparring person, in a street situation that person will deck you. You can be the worlds greatest kicker, you know how to kick, but knowing when to kick is the main thing. If you don’t know when to kick, forget about knowing how to kick, that’s where your timing comes in.

On this DVD Erle teaches very basic techniques on how to kick and how to punch. Erle says Tai Chi people who think chi or prana will protect you and you don’t need to know how to kick or punch is garbage. He believes in an internal energy but not a super human force that can knock you down or be summoned any time you want. Chi or prana can be used and can only ever be used when it is absolutely necessary. Subconsciously we have no control over the use of this power in a martial art sense, that is a fighting sense. We do have control in a healing sense, which is another area of Tai Chi and Bagua.

Teach how to punch techniques for Tai Chi and Bagua
Teach how to kick from old and new Yang Style -
Kick to the legs train high for stretch and power for low kicks.
Teach locks and holds -
Erle does locks and holds but he does not like them, because if you are trained at an advanced level no one can lock or hold you. He teaches what he calls silly locks or holds in case you need them in a certain situation covering all situations.
In Tai Chi he does not believe in techniques as a self defence but for health benefits.
Many techniques for Tai Chi and Bagua will use only about 2% in our lives, some techniques are useful others are not. We train in certain areas to make simple techniques easier as we subconsciously learn to fight not by technique. Techniques are not used, they help the mind and body adjust to defend yourself.
Competition sparring is useless
because two martial artists go at each other, your ready for him to hit and you him. In the street a maniac will go at you full force, no protective gear to protect you and no three minute rounds.
Two great self defence techniques in Tai Chi are fingers to the eyes and heel kick to the knees
Self defence is not difficult, all it takes is common sense and logical thinking. If he attacks you hit him first
How to punch Fa-jing -
the whole body shakes upon impact, you give up yourself and your ego.

1. Snap straight punch to face - Hold wrist relaxed until impact wrist turns up using the three smaller knuckles which are stronger and more surface area than the first two knuckles. You don’t pull your fist back it just bounces off the mitt, do five fast punches both hands alternate as fast as possible. The one inch punch comes from this technique.

2. Follow through or continuous punch to face - Punch is a more powerful punch, flicks at the end like the snap punch but follows through, the hand arcs down.

3. Over downward punch to neck - Like throwing a ball, the wrist turns clockwise like a hammer fist except use small three knuckles.

4. Stalk Spread Wings punch to temple - Very powerful punch never use unless you want to knock somebody's head off. Swing from the hip, use back of hand first three knuckles.

5. Back Fist - power comes form the pullback, as you close your fist it whips. You can hit down the chin or to the side.

6. Back Turning Fist - turn foot in, spin on heels.

7. Palm Strike - like throwing a ball. Flick hand relaxed, strike downward.

8. Back of Palm - to face, Arm, chest - downward

9. Back of Palm - to bottom of face - upward

10. Knife hand - to neck, palm edge not fingers make contact, flick hand at the end.

11. Snake Palm - to eyes, neck palm up or down. Two fingers to eyes, all fingers to neck. Never push straight in, you can break fingers by pushing back into the sockets. You need some give, flexibility to fingers.

12. Penetration Punch - to temple hard bony area it’s not a roundhouse punch, wrist turns over, use first two knuckles like a snap punch. Used as a block and a punch at the same time. Use back of hand not palm side.

13. Knuckle Punch - to side of face. Temple Thumb is held on top or a little over the side, never tight fist like karate style. Use first knuckle joint. It’s a roundhouse punch with a knuckle.

14. Elbow Strike twist your waist, Fa-jing

15. Uppercut Punch - to chin, fa-jing straight up wrist moves clockwise. Another way of this punch is turn counter clockwise using the back of the hand with knuckles striking upward.

16. Heel Palm Strike - from Small San Sau. Hand moves counter clockwise, flick at the end hitting with the palm. Turning clockwise palm turns up. You can turn palms up or down.

17. Cobra Palm - to back of neck, A through strike not a round house. Thumb rests on pointer finger, the rest of fingers like a fist.

Punches to the Body - A heavy bag workout. Punches to the body are different than to the face, the face and chest area are hard bony areas. Never hit CV14 unless your life is threatened. As the fist moves down the body from the head to below the waist the angle of the fist changes from straight to 45° to 90° to 180°. Punch 45° to CV14, fist is 90° to the lower abdomen area.

Three Palms in Bagua

1. Heel Palm - The heavy bag makes a thud sound when you hit it.

2. Percussion Palm - Bag makes a popping sound.

3. Frog Palm - A combination of heel palm and percussion palm.

Palm facing fist
Follow through back fist
Back turning follow through back fist

Fa-jing Punching

1. Cross Punch - Combine with back fist

2. With your eyes closed your partner pushes your arm and with your other hand you open your eyes and strike the mitt. He pushed your arm instead of saying go.

The whole principle of Tai Chi is to hit them before they hit you. The main thing in Tai Chi fighting is distance (you have to learn what your own circle of defence is). If you are standing away from someone out of striking distance, do not move in to attack, he may hit you first.

The principle of Tai Chi Fighting - There is never any attack in Tai Chi, you wait for them to attack you. That does not mean he will throw a punch before you attack, but if you are walking around in a fighting situation as soon as he gets in your line of defence as he is going to punch you, attack his arm or open him up. If he comes at you with a punch, hit him first, move in not back. Simultaneously block and attack, if you move back he can keep coming. Once someone moves in, even if he has not launched a physical attack on you he is coming in, that means he has attacked you, he has attacked your area of defence. Your opponent is at a disadvantage, you should never be able to be beat because if he comes in, attack him first.

Training Exercises

1. Blocking Kicks - Always move in, block and move to the outside or inside of his kick, unless he is so far away the kick will not hit you anyway, move back a little. If the kick is really going to hit you use a barge in technique, block the kick and strike. Use a block or P'eng technique.

2. Roundhouse Kick Training Method - P'eng, and block up attackers kick, one time for each kick, first kick p'eng, second kick p'eng, third higher kick block up normally. In a fight you won’t just stand there and take the kick, that’s why it is a training technique. If you just stand there and try to just block the kick you will get decked every time, you have to hit him.

3. Back Turning Kick - As soon as the kicker moves attack, don’t wait to block the kick.

4. Waist Flexibility Exercise - Face front, partner moves you by pushing your shoulders left side then right. You only turn at the waist adding tension so you spring back. Push shoulders as far as they will go.

5. Method from Tai Chi Form, high pat on horse training method -  Block high, block low, attack face and kick to the groin, by turning the foot to get in there. See video for complete instruction.

6. Stop people from coming in from the side - Throw a punch, your partner blocks it and throws a punch to your side, block the punch and re-attack. Use your punch hand to block and re-attack with other shift your waist.

7. Eight Kicking Method from Bagua - Face each other, partner kicks you low with his left foot you block it with your right heel, he brings his foot back and does the same kick again with your right kick his calf are with a low side kick. Then he attacks you with his right leg and you slap it across with your right leg. Then he kicks with his left leg and you kick his calf on the inside of his leg with your leg, can be a heel kick. Then do the other side.

8. Blocking Methods for Tai Chi P'eng and Hinge - Do not block or push, use a bumping method a flick and a bump, it is a damaging strike. Use of hinge and p'eng blocks, see DVD for instruction.

9. P'eng and Hinge Training Methods from Bagua - See DVD for instruction.

10. Simultaneous block and attack, snake fingers to the eyes - See DVD

11. Methods for Great Awareness - Use a noise (sound) to help stop an attack, any noise. You can make a sound quicker than you can actually react to something. See DVD.

12. Mitt Work Spinning Methods - See DVD

13. Opening Up Method - If you are not close to an attacker use against hands and legs of opponent, the legs attack him from the inside, the outside you just kick them. See DVD.

14. Bear Method From Bagua - See DVD

16. Centrifugal kicks against attack

17. Step Forward Parry and Punch from Tai Chi Method - A. Attack the arm with knuckle punch. B. Hinge block and attack.

In Tai Chi the following principle is one of the most important, The classics tell us:

A. If our wrist is attacked we fold it up and attack with the elbow.

B. If elbow is attacked fold it up and attack with the shoulder.

C. If our shoulder is attacked fold it up and attack with the head and so on.

D. When folding if struck just fold do not hold the arm stiff. See DVD.

E. The folding principle has a specific training method.

18. Bobbing and Weaving Method - additional techniques to ones we already learned. See DVD.

19. Chinese Chee Sau - Learn simultaneous block and attack. Also kicking and holds, you can do anything you want.

20. Bagua Walking Training Method -  use any of your techniques from the walking.

Erle Montaigue shows exactly how to get in when someone has a really strong on guard stance, or who is ready for you. Some real sleeper holds are applied as well on this tape. You not only need to know where the Dim-Mak points are, how to strike them, the correct direction and weight, but most importantly, you need to know how to fight! If you cannot get at the attacker to strike him, what good is learning all of the points? So this tape gives you the necessary information for getting in there to apply the point strikes under any circumstances.

On this tape, Erle carries on with the fighting methods series. Here he includes many deadly Baguazhang fighting methods as well as some Taijiquan methods. These are not only fighting methods however, they are considered to be the "mother methods" from whence all other techniques come. The internal Fighting Systems give us the bare essentials to understand self-defence. However, out of these fighting methods there are literally hundreds of techniques. These methods teach us to go internal and defend at a sub-conscious level. The Dim-Mak applications are also included on in this series.
Included is the Bagua Dragon Fighting method of yang Dragon, the 'Soft' Dragon and the 'Elusive Dragon'. Also covered are many of the 'Snake' methods as well as the 'Phoenix' methods.

Getting in Touch with your Reptile Brain By Erle Montaigue:

When I introduced the concept of the Reptile Brain to the martial arts community many years ago, many were enthralled, many were sceptical. Once upon a time, the mention of the 'reptile brain' would bring tumultuous laughter from most of the scientific community. Nowadays however, it is a different matter with this area of the brain now being recognized by the wider scientific community. It even has an area of the whole brain allocated to it. The reptile brain is actually the 'brain stem' that area of the base of the skull that holds so much significance to we in the internal martial arts. The brainstem (Photo No. 1), is the portion of the brain comprising the medulla oblongata, the pons, and the mesencephalon (midbrain). It performs motor, sensory and reflex functions and contains the corticospinal and the retriculospinal tracts. The 12 pairs of cranial nerves from the brain arise mostly from the brainstem. To break it down into its individual components we also see that they are widely used in sensory stuff. The Pineal Body (Gland) is also housed in the Reptile Brain and we have ways to enhance this very important gland to get it back to its former glory, that which we only now find in animals such as dolphins, whales and seals.

Takes the novice right from the beginning in learning purely self defence the way Erle Montaigue learnt it. Training methods whereby the beginner is able to coordinate body and mind and take the self defence methods into the reflex area rather than only learning techniques etc.  These are some of the most dangerous striking methods ever invented aimed at the most vulnerable parts of the body. We only have three combined training methods to begin with
(with sub-0methods for each) and these give you all you will ever need in a real confrontation or life or death situation. Instantaneous defence and attacking methods that go into one’s sub-conscious and never leave you. Mostly aimed at the neck and eye area, these methods will stick with you through out your life and although I say that they are ‘basic’ you will find them very advanced really. I can recommend this series to anyone beginner or advanced martial artist. And after not looking at this title in particular for about ten years, and having just viewed it all the way through, I now believe that this should be taught all students!

This is the follow on from No. MTG36. Contains some very useful information on using Dim-Mak and the training methods used to gain dim-mak. Also more multiple strikes & their effects. At the beginning of this tape, Erle Montaigue shows how the 'large San-Sau' with a partner should be done at its quickest pace, even though the dogs do try to attack the student performing with Erle!
A great training method from Baguazhang involving the Dim-Mak point called GB 22 is shown. GB 22 is a knock out and Qi drainage point and this training method teaches how to get at this dangerous point.
A training method form 'Xingyi' which involves the open and closed sides training and the foot slapping method. Called the "4 Striking Method". This could also come fro
m
the postures from Taiji called "Sit back ready". It teaches fa-jing and there are four methods. Each of the four methods follow each other in a solo training routine as well as putting the whole ting together with a partner. Points shown are GB 14, PC 6, CV 22, GV 26, TH 17, SI 17.
Attack/Defence training is one of the best ways to learn about 'Street Fighting' and some really good methods are included here. training against kicks is also shown using this method. ST 9 is the main point taught here. Also shown are some really sneaking attacking methods that will have you at the advantage.
Eagle Vision training is taught which is an excellent way for the novice (someone not versed in the Montaigue System) to get into this way of fighting. Here we use striking to our partner as he or she moves all over the place. We must not however, see with our focus vision.
Bagua circle fighting training is also shown on this tape.
