June 27th & 28th 2026

Eli Montaigue will be running a weekend workshop on Taiji Fighting Principles.

Usually Taiji is seen as a health art similar to Yoga, but in fact this is only one part of Taiji.
The complete system of Taiji encompasses many different aspects, from gentle Qigong, to full combat training involving sparring.

All styles of martial art have their own take on fighting, but at the end of the day fighting is fighting, so these differences are subtle, at least from all the styles that actually work.

The difference for example between Taiji and MMA, is that in Taiji we have to also be aware of the types of attacks which are not allowed in the sport of MMA.
We have to be aware of strikes to the eyes, groin, back of the head. We also have to be more aware to not damage our own hands, since we would not be wearing gloves in a real fight for self defence. We of course wear gloves sometimes when sparring, otherwise you would get far to injured every time you spar, but when we do pad work and other sparring drills we don't wear them.

This means the way we strike is a little different compared to boxing for example.

At the workshop Eli will be focussing on striking attack/defence, and stand up grappling as well as some Chin Na (Joint Locking)

You don't need gloves to participate, but if you have some, bring them along, as they will enable you to do some of the drills in a more realistic way.
Or you can buy a pair of our WTBA Sparring Gloves, just lets us know in advance to bring them.

The workshop will be open to all levels, some things will suit beginners, others will suit more skill students. Most things will be practiced by everyone, if you are a beginner you will simple do it slowly.
